AGENT Video – Can Genetic Diversity Save Farming?
A new video released by the AGENT project highlights the vital role of traditional crop varieties – known as landraces – in building climate-resilient agriculture. These centuries-old varieties, carefully preserved in gene banks, hold a wealth of genetic diversity that modern crops often lack. As climate change puts growing pressure on agriculture, landraces could provide the traits needed to help crops adapt. The AGENT project is working to unlock this potential by digitally connecting gene banks across Europe and applying cutting-edge DNA technologies to identify valuable traits hidden in these traditional varieties. By making it easier to identify which landraces are best suited to meet specific challenges, AGENT aims to support more sustainable, climate-resilient farming systems.
