Federal Research Center the N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources
— VIR —
VIR is a leading Russian research Institute focusing on systematic collection, preservation, study and rational use of genetic resources of cultivated plants and their wild relatives. At the same time the institute is one of the largest and richest in the world of the botanical diversity of plant genebanks. In Russia VIR is the only gene bank of plant genetic resources, collected from all over the Earth, which serves as a strategic base of effective sustainable development not only agriculture, but also all sectors of the economy and social sphere. The world plant germplasm collection stored at VIR serves as the base for all domestic breeding programs. Besides the advanced modern cultivars VIR genebank is keeping seeds of ancient varieties, landraces and wild relatives; many of them do not exist in their natural places anymore. VIR germplasm collection obviously keeps valuable alleles that could improve modern crop cultivars, but they are usually present in ex situ collections with very low frequency. Currently, one of the most important activities of VIR genebank is the molecular screening of the germplasm on the DNA level searching for rare valuable alleles that could not be revealed by phenotype in the field.
Role within AGENT
VIR will contribute to WP2, providing DNA samples of barley and wheat germplasm for genotyping, to WP3 and WP4 providing phenotyping data for barley and wheat germplasm, establishing genomic prediction models for a European network of training populations, participating in WP7 - Dissemination (scientific publication, multimedia publication for broad audience outreach) and training (capacity building gene bank genomics management practices).
